Overview

Overview

The Little Friends of the Holy Face of Jesus (LFHFJ) is an association for children, ages 5 (or even younger) to 11 years old.  This organization takes a very important place in the Congregation’s apostolate for the youth because of their vulnerabilities.  That is why, in their formation and developmental programs, involvement of families or significant persons in their lives are necessary.  These children, when they reach 12 years of age, will be enrolled to become members of the Young Apostles of the Holy Face of Jesus.  As they mature, they are likewise encourage to become Crusaders of the Holy Face of Jesus where they can continually fulfill their noble roles in the Church and in society according to their status in life.

History

History

The establishment of theLittle Friends of the Holy Face of Jesus (LFHFJ) was conceived by Rev. Mo. Mary Therese L. Vicente, HFJ in 1994 when she saw that many children came with their family to the Holy Face Center & Convent, Philippines. They continually come even as grownups. Mo. Therese realized that they too can already be led to Jesus and Mary given the proper encouragement and formation fit to their stage.  But since the focus was on stabilizing the lay formation of the Crusaders and the Young Apostles of the Holy Face of Jesus, the idea was temporarily set aside.

In June 2004, this was revived through Sr. Elvira Barruga, HFJ  as gathered many kids from elementary grades in Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Mexico, Pampanga. At first, they were taught to participate in the Church as lectors and sacristans in the Mass.  But somehow it didn’t flourish for lack of grounding.  July 2009, when Sr. Elvira was transferred to the Holy Face Center in Quiapo, Manila, and was assigned to the youth apostolate, she taught of starting it up again with the blessing and permission of Mo. Mary Immaculate R. Piedad, HFJ, the then superior general of the Congregation.  Going around the nearby streets in Hidalgo Street at Quiapo, Sr. Elvira, Aspirant Cristy, Leo Fangon, Raymond, and Ofelyn Salas invited poor and street children and 47 of them came to attend the Sunday’s Mass the following day.  It was August 9, 2009 when it all begun and these children kept on coming to attend the services at the Center.  In March 2011, the first batch of 12 was invested as Little Friends of the Holy Face of Jesus.  At present, there are already 47 members of them and some had already become members of the Young Apostles.

Vision-Mission

Vision-Mission

“We, the Little Friends of the Holy Face of Jesus, moved by the Spirit to be followers and friends of Jesus see ourselves as “little evangelizers” who take part in the works of the Sisters of the Holy Face of Jesus in spreading the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus among other children so that they too can have the same chance to learn, to develop, and to feel happy and fulfilled.

What We Do

What We Do

The Programs for Little Friends has still much room for improvement. Gaining the support of others, the Congregation had high hopes that more can be given to them in God’s time.

Education and Capability Building

Good education is important in the well-being of children but still there are many who do not receive proper education or no chance to get educated at all due to poverty, especially here in Quiapo, Manila, Philippines.  At the Holy Face Center, Little Friends are being helped by:

  1. raising their level of confidence and awareness of their capabilities through team building, cooperative works, creative activities, and empowering them, though they are so young, to take responsibility for their own development because of their situational realities;
  2. motivating them to dream and to strive hard in their studies or to want to study;
  3. enabling them, while influencing their parents or significant others, to be hopeful despite their social, emotional, and mental issues; and
  4. promoting the lifestyle of good manners and right conduct although they are coming from troubled personal histories.

Physical Wellness

  1. Involvement in sports or play games
  2. Recreation
  3. Feeding children

Spiritual and Value Formation

  1. Introducing the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus
  2. Participation in Holy Hours and Holy Masses
  3. Attending First Friday Vigils in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  4. Regular Catechesis
  5. BEC – Basic Ecclesial Communion where the children read the Gospel and are encouraged to speak out their own stories

Church Involvement

  1. Attending youth formation offered by the Lay Force in San Carlos Seminary, Makati City, Philippines
  2. Participating in the youth formation offered by the Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila
  3. Mingling with other youth organizations in the Archdiocese

Meet Little Friends

Meet Little Friends

ubay's kidsWe are the children of Mr. & Mrs. Jephty Ubay residing at a shanty in Bilibid Viejo, Quiapo, Manila.  Six of us, except Jacob (2 year old), are members of the Little Friends of the Holy Face of Jesus since we were invested on March 23, 2012. Though we are so poor, my father, hired as porter in the market, we are happy to be part of Little Friends.  Here we feel part of the family of the sisters, we learn how to pray and be friends with other children.
