HISTORY

HISTORY

Committed to continue the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, formal establishment of the Crusaders of the Holy Face of Jesus came about.  The first head of the associations was Bro. Nestor Florentino (co-legionary of Mo. Therese) might be the appointed head of the association circa 1978, when he, together with other co-legionaries, devotees of the Holy Face from Manila and Sta. Cruz, Laguna consented to be received as Crusaders.  Although the planned investiture on February 11, 1978, then on March 23, 1978 did not materialize for some reasons, they continually met regularly and held the regular Tuesday devotion in Quiapo, Manila. The first meeting of the prospect Crusaders with the Handmaids and Apostles of Mary took place on April 30, 1978; and the first 50 Crusaders of the Holy Face was formally received on February 11, 1980.

Mo. Therese’ passionate spiritual conferences during their weekly holy hours attracted hundreds of lay people to contemplate the sufferings of Christ and the mystery of his humanity.  And with the growth of this new mission, Mo. Therese looked for a permanent place to establish a Holy Face Center.  It was then that Mo. Therese saw an empty house, a century-old, two storey wooden building at 1111 R. Hidalgo Street, Quiapo, Manila, a lot situated beside the Zaragoza Building.  Forlorn and considered as haunted house by passersby, it remained unoccupied since the time it was purchased by the Gregorio Araneta Foundation to a businessman named Carlos Presylers. Thus, Mo. Therese contacted those persons involved and asked help to have the said lot.  While negotiation was taking place, Architect Zaragoza offered their house adjacent to the Araneta’s lot for temporary shelter of the Daughters of Mary.

Eventually, with the mediation of Doña Pacita Araneta, sister of Mo. Therese’ baptismal sponsor Don Salvador Araneta, Mo. Therese was able to buy the said house on a staggered basis with the assistance of the Holy Face Association and friends.  The house was made habitable after clearing the premises and instituting the much needed repairs.  Further improvements were made and the veranda was converted into a chapel.   The DM sisters (Mo. Therese, Sr. Dalisay, Sr. Erna and Sr. Nilda) occupied the house on May 13, 1977.  Then on July 5, 1977, permission was granted by  His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, D.D. to establish the house with the primary purpose of propagating the Devotion to the Holy  Face of Jesus.

On October 8, 1988, a Certificate of recognition is granted to the Crusaders of the Holy Face as a National Religious Lay Organization by the Episcopal Commission on the Laity (ECLA). Then on November 7, 1988, the Crusaders of the Holy Face of Jesus was officially accepted as a member of the Council of the Laity (LAIKO). With the new thrust to spread and deepen the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, the association formed a National Education and Outreach Ministry, whose head is appointed by the Executive Directress of the Crusaders (at the same time the superior general of the Sisters of the Holy Face of Jesus) in consultation with the National Director. The first appointed head was Sis. Gaines Marie Rosario.  Eventually, the first Archdiocesan Education and Outreach Ministry was also formed by Rev. Msgr. Cristobal Garcia in Cebu; then in Pampanga by Rev. Msgr. Eugenio S. Mercado, Jr.; and in Cagayan by Rev. Fr. Roger Cortez.

Prayer Life

Prayer is a loving communication with God. It involves listening and making a response. Prayer is the centering of our consciousness in the sacred temple of the self wherein dwells the True Absolute. Through this constant centering, the person is able to establish a personal relationship with the Blessed Trinity, the Blessed Mother, the Saints and then Angels.

Our personal concept of prayer usually determines the quality of our prayer life. If our concept of prayer is greatly influenced by routine and requirements, it would not be surprising to find prayer as burdensome, boring and aggravating.

Since prayer is a form of communication, it is very important that we clarify our concept of the Being or Person we wish to communicate with. This will also bring an awareness of the reason behind our attitude towards prayer.

A consistent prayer life facilitates and enhances personality integration:

  1. Prayer gives the person a sense of security
  2. It restores emotional equilibrium thus restoring calm and peace to the psyche.
  3. Relationship with god in prayer fosters spiritual growth.
  4. It sharpens one’s perception of reality in the light of eternity.
  5. It solidifies and stabilizes ego-strength.
  6. It affirms the gifts bestowed by God upon the individual
  7. It brings about the conscious awareness of the reality of the healing and freeing effects of relationship with God.
  8. It enables one to absorb the true spirit of Christ.
  9. It enables the individual to transcend human conflicts and tragedies.

The prayerful person is therefore secure in God and in his/her human relationships.

Way of Life

  1. Regular and frequent reception of the Sacraments
  2. Visit and Adore the Blessed Sacrament at least once a week.
  3. Fidelity to one’s state of life
  4. Frequent meditation on the Word of God and the Articles of Faith

  8. To wear the medal at all times as reminder of the 2 fold marks of a Crusaders’ apostolate and spirituality.

  11. To see the Face of Jesus in each person and foster among each other the spirit of unity and brotherly love. (refer to John 13:34-35)

Act of Reparation to the Holy Face of our Lord Jesus Christ

I adore and praise Thee, O my divine Jesus, Son of the Living God, and I desire to make satisfaction for all the outrages which I, the most miserable of all Thy creatures, have offered Thee in all the members of Thy blessed Body, and particularly in Thy adorable Face. Hail, worshipful Face, disfigured by spittle, and hardly recognized through the cruel treatment which thou didst receive from thy impious ones, I salute Thee, O blessed eyes, all bathed in tears, which Thou didst for my salvation.

I salute Thee, O blessed ears, assailed by blasphemes, insult and cruel mockeries. I salute Thee, O blessed mouth, filled with graces and tenderness for poor sinners, but embittered with vinegar and gall by the monstrous ingratitude of the people whom Thou didst choose from among all others. In reparation for all these ignominies, I offer Thee all the homage which is given Thee in that Holy place where Thou art pleased to be honored with special worship, uniting myself therewith. Amen.

(It is recommended that Crusaders daily pray these act of consecration and reparation)

HOLY FACE SONG

O Face Divine of Jesus

In ages long ago

Prophets and sages prayed that thou

On earth thy light would show

Most Holy Face I cried to thee

Like them that thy beams may see

Most Holy Face I cried to thee (2x)

O suffering Face of Jesus

O that redeeming tree

Crying aloud, Oh why my God

Hast thou forsaken me

Most Holy Face I cried to thee

Plead by thine agony for me

Most Holy Face I cried to thee (2x)

O dying Face of Jesus

Bleeding, soiled and torn

Thy temple and thy brow transpierced

With many a cruel thorns

Most Holy Face I cried to thee

Offer thy wounds to God for me

Most Holy Face I cried to thee (2x)

O Glorious Face of Jesus

If after I have died

My soul but in thy likeness make

I shall be satisfied

Most Holy Face I cried to thee

More like thee ever make thou me

Most Holy Face I cried to thee (2x)

BANAL NA MUKHA AY ITANGHAL (Himig: Ating Pangarap)

Ang Banal na Mukha ay ating itanghal

Sa puso ng lahat na kanyang nilalang

Siya’y ating pag-asa, sandigan sa dusa

Laging naghihintay at nag-aanyaya
