Rev. Mo. Mary Therese L. Vicente, HFJ (1921 – 1995)
and the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus

How does this devotion had reached the Philippines?

It all started with the medal and leaflets of the Holy Face of Jesus.  In August 1976, Mo. Therese was requested by Mrs. Pilar Zaragoza, a benefactor and a friend, to help spread the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus by giving her a Holy Face medal and leaflets.  Believing that it meant simply distributing the medals and leaflets, she gladly accepted the request.  This led to her appointment as Custodian of the Exhibit of the Holy Shroud at the Manila Cathedral when the replica image was brought to the Philippines through the mediation of the late Ambassador (Architect) Jose M. Zaragoza, the then Chancellor of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Philippine Chapter, and the appointed caretaker of Msgr. Guilio Ricci of the Exhibition of the Holy Shroud from Turin in the Philippines.

Mo. Therese was drawn, as other people as well, to this devotion to the suffering Face of Jesus Christ. She became not only a dedicated promoter but was also inspired to found religious and lay organizations whose charism, spirituality and mission springs from the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.  In obedience to God’s holy will, which was also manifested to her solicitous consultation with the ecclesiastical authorities, religious and lay  organizations were born, and they are: CRUSADERS OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS, MISSIONARY OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS, SISTERS OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS, and the YOUNG APOSTLES OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS .

With her love for the Lord and our Blessed Mother, she courageously faced the many trials and difficulties of her foundations and was able to put up a Holy Face Center & Convent in 1111 F. R. Hidalgo Street, Quiapo, Manila. Trustingly convinced and assured of God’s Divine Providence, the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus continually spread nationwide and the Holy Face Center became a refuge for all who seek the Lord’s Face for various reasons.
